Confused about setting sprays? Lock It or Refresh It.

November 24, 2025

Setting sprays have become a makeup staple—but they can be a little confusing. Not all sprays are created equal, and knowing which type to use can make a huge difference in how your makeup looks and feels.

Broadly speaking, there are two main types of setting sprays:

1. The “Hardcore” Hold Sprays

These are your go-to for long days, weddings, or events where your makeup needs to stay put no matter what.

  • What they do: Lock your makeup in place, prevent smudging, and reduce shine.
  • What’s inside: Many contain alcohol, which helps the product dry quickly and hold makeup in place.
  • Who they’re for: Perfect for oily skin, long events, or if you want a “no touch-ups needed” look.

Pro tip: Because they can be a little drying, it’s best to pair them with a well-moisturised base or a hydrating primer. Also I would keep these ones for special occasions as they aren’t great to breath in everyday.

My top picks: Patrick Starr ‘Til dawn’, L’Oréal Paris setting mist.

2. The Hydrating/Refreshing Sprays

These sprays are all about glow, comfort, and keeping your makeup looking fresh throughout the day.

  • What they do: Blend your makeup seamlessly into the skin, add hydration, and give a subtle glow.
  • What’s inside: Usually water-based with added hydrating ingredients like glycerin or aloe. No harsh alcohols.
  • Who they’re for: Great for dry skin, midday touch-ups, or when you want your makeup to feel light and skin-like.

Pro tip: Keep one in your bag for a midday refresh—it can make your makeup look just applied, even hours later.

How to choose?

It really comes down to your skin type, the weather, and your plans for the day. If you’re going to an event or need full-proof hold, the “hardcore” spray is your friend. If you want a glowy, dewy finish or just a quick refresh, reach for a hydrating spray. Sometimes I even layer the two: hydrating first, then a light mist of a long-wear spray on top.

Setting sprays aren’t just about makeup staying put—they’re about enhancing your look, keeping your skin happy, and making sure your makeup works with you, not against you.

My top picks for hydrating sprays that help makeup melt into skin and look extra glowy:

  • Mac fix plus
  • Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless
  • d’Alba Italian White Truffle First Spray.

Lock it, refresh it, love it!
